Case Study - HR in the Independent Education Sector

Heather McCaig

What is your current role?

I am currently an HR Consultant for Gravitate HR

What qualifications do you hold?

I graduated in June 2007 with 1st Class BA Hons in Business Law from Stirling University.

Why did you get into HR?

I haven't always wanted to work in HR, however I have always known I wanted to do something in regulation, therefore Employment Law really interested me. I am fascinated by the balance of employee and employers rights and that's why I wanted to get in to HR after studying employment law in my third year at University.

How did you get into HR?

Whilst working part time at University, at the same time as studying employment law, I worked in the ‘personnel' office of a supermarket. This confirmed to me that I wanted to work in HR. After graduating, I started looking for an HR role. I landed lucky at Gravitate HR not long after Graduating!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years' time?

In 5 years time, I want to be CIPD qualified and and build upon my existing knowledge and skills.

What's been your biggest career high so far?

Before coming to Gravitate HR, I worked for Aegon UK, where I was jointly responsible for setting up a new team within a large pensions department. It was extremely challenging and yet rewarding to break down the existing barriers in the department and doing a lot of internal process improvement.

Who is your biggest inspiration?

My Mum

Describe yourself in three words
